If you’re passionate about animals and have always wanted to own a zoo, we’ve got some good news: there’s a private zoo on sale in Florida with over 90 exotic animals thrown in to sweeten the deal. The weird part? It’s being sold on Craigslist.
The owners of the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge Zoological Park in Crestview, Florida, are selling the property and its animals. For just $350,000, you can get a 10-acre USDA complaint zoo that’s well maintained with more than 90 healthy and happy exotic animals, including sloths, lemurs, wolves, otters, bob cats, black bears, baboons, llamas, white tigers, Bengal tigers, African lions, patas monkeys, fennec foxes, and more.
Don’t know what patas monkeys look like or what they eat? Don’t worry—the zoo comes with a staff of zookeepers, but their salaries are probably not included in the $350,000 price tag. The property also has a stocked gift shop, storage buildings, and a commissary with freezers. A tractor, golf cart, and other maintenance equipment are also included in the sale.
Bill Andersen, the refuge’s president and chairman of its board of directors, told the Ocala Star Banner that they took over the property four years ago to rescue the animals, but they had no intention of running it permanently.
“We’ve spent an awful lot of time getting those critters happy and healthy, updating habitats, and providing them with a quality place to live,” Andersen said. “I think our zoo is in the best shape it’s ever been.”
Andersen ultimately hopes that Okaloosa County and the City of Crestview might be interested in buying the zoo, but if that won’t happen then the next best option is a passionate animal lover with the drive and financial means to run a zoo and keep the animals happy.
